European Study Research Lisbon
December 2011
On this year’s second research trip, the ESR December, we will visit the wonderful city of Lisbon in Portugal. It will take place between the 27th of November and the 4rd of December 2011. Six weeks before the actual research trip begins we will have a lecture on each Monday evening, which will be held by the teachers as well as guest lecturers. Here, the participants - who will be divided into groups - will get the chance to acquire the required skills in order to execute a business research. After the lecture, we will have drinks in a bar so that participants as well as teachers and the committee members can socialize and get to know everybody a little bit better. After coming back from Lisbon to Groningen there are going to be two more lectures where the research report will be finalized.
Next to our 6-member committee, we will take with us around 25 ambitious and interested students, an EBF Board member and two teachers from the faculty of Economics and Business. In the week we will spend in Lisbon, we will visit different kinds of organizations - domestic and multinationals - which helps participants to get different kinds of views on their research topic. However, this trip is not only a business trip but also we also going to be tourists there, exploring the city by day and night-time. Next to the companies, we will get the chance to see the highlights of the city, by doing social and cultural activities.
Overall, the participants have to prepare themselves for a very busy and packed trip, with lots of fun and a lot to learn.
If this sounds appealing to you, then take your chance and become part of this project. A number of ECTS between 40 and 150 is required for participation. The costs for the trip will be €175. Apply as soon as possible by filling out the application form provided on this website. The deadline is the 18th of September.

The theme for ESR Lisbon will be:
“Survival of the fittest: Lions versus sheep”…
…competition in a changing environment.
Nowadays, competition gets stronger and corporate success is only reachable for companies, which are able to adapt as fast as possible to the turbulent environment. Portugal, as we all know, is one of the countries that has to deal with big environmental changes; only the best companies know how to deal with this.
The best companies in the market are marked as lions: the organizations that will turn out to be the strongest in the long term, and therefore will survive. Lions are the symbol of pride, resistance and pure power, which are the exact ingredients that make these companies the best.
On the other hand, sheep are interpreted to be weak, naïve and mindless; the companies with these aspects are the non-survivors in the market.
In our research, we are interested in the lions of the markets: What are their success factors? We are trying to divide up these success factors through the subthemes below.
1. Technology
To what extent does the subtheme technology have influence on the survival position of a company? Is there a significant relation between technology and firm performance? One can think of technology as the systematic application of science in technique. Therefore, technology has to do with the sorting and ranking of information. Without technology there would not be a manner to process information and thus all information would be useless. This is why we can define the term technology in an economic sense as follows: The purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities.
2. Strategy
You can think of strategy as ‘a way to get somewhere’. A good strategy brings you closer to your goal. Without a corporate strategy the goals and guidelines in a corporation would not be clear and every employee would only chase individual goals. In short, without strategy there is no consensus. By thinking this way, we can define strategy as follows: A method or plan chosen to bring a company to a desired future, such as achievement of a goal or solution to a problem.
By doing research we want to discover a relationship between the subtheme strategy and the survival position of a firm. To what extent does the fast changing environment calls for a change or adjustment in strategy?
3. Labour
Through this subtheme we will investigate what kind of labour-related factors influence the survival position of a company; what kinds of labour is the company looking for and how does the company select these? Furthermore, how does the company manage their staff from an internal perspective?
4. Culture
This subtheme will help us understand how corporate- and external culture can give a competitive advantage and why this is crucial for surviving. We can define culture as the collective programming of the human mind that distinguishes the members of one human group from those or another. Culture in this sense is a system of collectively held values (Geert Hofstede). We can derive from this definition that different cultures value things differently. In this way you can understand that cultural believes are crucial for the survival position of a company.
5. Market environment
With this factor we want to investigate which market environment-related factors influence the survival position of a company. By investigating this we ask ourselves what the success factors of the concerning market environment are for a company. We define market environment as all those factors that affect a company's operation, including customers, competitors, stakeholders, suppliers, industry trends, regulations, social and economic factors as well as technological developments. Examples of crucial factors in the market environment are infrastructure, competitors and government.
