For the freshmen at the Faculty of Economics and Business the EBF Introductionweekend will be organized. The EBF Introductionweekend is one of the biggest in the Netherlands and will take place during the last weekend of the summerholidays before the studyyear starts again.

The introductionweekend is ment for freshmen to get in contact with their fellow students, studying and the study faculty association, the EBF. During the weekend, groups will be arranged by field of study as much as possible and are under supervision of senior students. These students will guide his or her group while undertaking activities. Moreover, you can ask him or her all questions you have.  

Last year, the EBF Introductionweekend took also place in the latest weekend of August on the German Isle of Borkum. The theme of the EBF Introductionwekeend 2008 was 'Ticket to the Tropics!' and the theme of 2009 was 'Bootcamp Borkum'.

This year, the EBF Introductieweekend will take place on the German isle of, in the weekend of 3,4 and 5 September 2010. The theme this year is Flower Power @ Borkum. Welcome to hippieland!

For the student who come along, you don't have to bring any sleepingstuff. There are pillows and blankets available including sheets.

The costs for the weekend are €49,50. This includes the costs for bus, boat, accomodation and meals. Drinking is for own account.

Monday September 6 2010 at 17.15: all students are invited to attend the festive opening ceremony of the Academic Year 2010-2011. The opening ceremony will take place on Broerplein in front of the Academiegebouw, in the heart of Groningen. The programme will last until approximately 22.00 and consists of the following:  

• Speech Rector Magnificus
• Toast with free champagne
• Various artists

Come and watch professors and students celebrate the new academic year together and make a toast with the Rector Magnificus!

EBF-JOVD Leadership Panel with Gerrit Zalm

The EBF organizes a Leadership Panel about two times a year. During this event a well-known speaker from the world of business or politics will give a lecture for a large group of students. The next Leadership Panel will be organised in association with the JOVD Groningen and will be held on Tuesday, September 21. The guest speaker will be the former minister of finance and board member of the ABN-Amro, Gerrit Zalm. He will give a lecture about the current crisis and how ABN-Amro deals with the fusion with Fortis.

Gerrit Zalm (born 6 May 1952) is a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Netherlands. He was the longest serving Minister of Finance in the history of the Netherlands and has been responsible for numerous reforms of the Dutch economy. On 21 November it was announced by Prime Minister Balkenende that Zalm will be the new CEO of the bank resulting from the merger of ABN and Fortis Netherlands, two recently nationalized banks.

After the Leadership Panel of Gerrit Zalm the Dutch Budget Propsal debate will kick-off with a jury consisting out of:

The discussion panel will be led by Janka Stoker, vice president of the Faculty of Economics and Business Groningen.

Guest speakers:

• Professor Arnoud W.A. Boot is Professor of Corporate Finance and Financial Markets at the University of Amsterdam and Director of the Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE). He is a member of the SER and the Bank Council of the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). He is also advisor to the Riksbank (Central Bank of Sweden), Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London and at the Davidson Institute of the University of Michigan.
• Heleen Mees, MSc, FEB graduate, is an economist, lawyer and columnist. Since 2000 she has been living in New York, where she works as an advisor on EU affairs. As well as her column in NRC Handelsblad, Mees has published in international newspapers such as The International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, Financial Times and Japan Times. In April 2009 her second book, ‘Between Greed And Desire - The World Between Wall Street And Main Street’, was published. Her PhD is on ‘The power of China’. 

Chair:

Dr. Michael Koetter is Associate Professor at FEB. He is an expert in banking and finance, mergers and failures, efficiency and growth. Michael is a guest researcher at the Deutsche Bundesbank.
